Biografia

  • Si laurea in matematica nel 1971 a Pisa specializzandosi in linguaggi formali. Per via della curiosità verso il mondo degli elaboratori, che all'epoca era quasi una cultura da iniziati, nel novembre 1972 inizia a lavorare presso l'Istituto CNUCE di Pisa, per lavorare come sistemista sul sistema operativo CP/CMS della IBM (versione sperimentale del successivo VM).
  • Si avvicina al mondo delle reti nel 1976 sviluppando software per il progetto RPCNET. Dal 1978 in poi il suo impegno è focalizzato sul coordinamento e lo sviluppo della rete telematica del CNR. Grazie a questa attività può essere testimone e protagonista dello sviluppo delle Reti per la Ricerca in Europa e dalla rete GARR in Italia.
  • Nella pianificazione dello sviluppo delle reti, ha sempre preferito dare la priorità alle soluzioni di volta in volta più rispondenti ai bisogni dell'utenza, cercando di evitare di essere vincolato dall'adesione a particolari scuole di pensiero (non solo OSI) e senza esitare, quando necessario, a distruggere ciò che aveva costruito negli anni precedenti.
  • Attualmente lavora a Pisa presso l'Istituto di Informatica e Telematica del CNR, coordina il Comitato di Gestione della Infrastruttura di Rete Telematica del CNR ed è membro del Comitato Tecnico Scientifico del Consortium GARR.

Curriculum

  • Born in Rome (Italy) on March 5th, 1949. In 1971 he gets a laurea, cum laude, in Mathematics from the University of Pisa (http://www.unipi.it/).
  • In the same year he gets the Diploma in Mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (http://www.sns.it/).
  • In 1972 he gets a Specialization in Automated Computing at the University of Pisa From November 1972 to February 1974 he is at the Institute CNUCE of Pisa with a scholarship of the Ministry of Public Education.
  • From March 1974 to November 1975 he is with the Italian Navy for the military service. During the last months of service he is Midshipman of the Coastguard and his main activity is to teach Informatics at the Istituto di Guerra Marittima.
  • On December 20th, 1975 he is employed at the Institute CNUCE with the title of CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, http://www.cnr.it/) Associate Researcher (Ricercatore Aggiunto).
  • Currently he is employed at the Institute for Informatics and Telematics (http://www.iit.cnr.it/) of CNR with the title of Dirigente Tecnologo (Technical Executive), and is responsible for planning and managing the nationwide network of CNR.

    • design and implementation of networking software (from 1976 to 1982)
    • planning and coordination of the network of CNR (since 1978)
    • participation in international committees for the coordination of National Research Networks: EARN, COSINE, RARE (since 1984)
    • CNR representative in the technical committees of GARR (http://www.garr.it/) – the Italian National Research Network (since 1987)
    • design of the IP multicast routing plan for the GARR network (1999- 2000)
    • introduction of IP telephony services in CNR (since 2000)
    • participation in the 6Net project (http://www.6net.org/), aimed at experimenting IPv6 in the European National Research Networks (since 2002)
  • From April 1979 to march 1980 he was a visiting scientist at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Centre in Yorktown Heights (NY).
  • In 1986 he was part of the team that activated the first Italian Internet connection.
  • In 1988 he worked as a consultant of Tecsiel S.p.A. His consultancy was aimed at supporting Tecsiel within a contract they had with IBM to develop OSI applications for IBM mainframes.
  • From 1990 to 1992 he was Secretary General of the EARN association (European Academic and Research Network) and from 1992 to 1994 he was Treasurer of the same association.
  • From 1994 to 1996 he was Treasurer of TERENA (Trans European Research and Education Networking Association).
  • Since 1992 he gives lectures at the Scuola Superiore Guido Reiss Romoli about networking protocols.
  • In December 1998 he was appointed by the Ministry of University and Research as a member of the GARR Technical Committee.
  • Starting April 2003 he is a member of the Technical and Scientific Committee of the GARR Consortium.
